Death Meditation (performance shot ) // 2015 // a guided meditation and yoga session on faux marble tile, yoga mats, a shrine with Bowie’s remains, and personal items
Death Meditation was a participatory performance piece set in a mausoleum themed room. The space served as a place of mourning and healing over the loss of my recently deceased canine companion, Bowie. The room also served as a place of contemplation where I led guided death meditation sessions. During these sessions I instructed people to envision their body going through the decomposition process while performing different yoga positions. Depictions of decomposition are used in Buddhist Meditations on Death and are meant to emphasize the preciousness of life and to promote the acceptance of our own fleeting existence. After the sessions came to a close, the project evolved into the Crypt Contemplation photo series which took a more intimate and inspired look at the essence of several objects that were closely adjacent to the deceased loved one while they were still present.
